This quote comes from a book written by Anne Lamott entitled "Traveling Mercies." In it, she writes about the experience of raising her son, Sam, who had severe cerebral palsy. She writes of an incident where Sam was screaming in pain from a severe rash. His mother had been trying to get him to see a doctor for a while, but he had been too frightened. Finally, she had the doctor come over and examine Sam.

The doctor said that he was not going to be able to treat his rash because it was too severe. However, he did have something that might help. He gave her a tube of cream and told her to put some on every time Sam was scratching.

He also recommended that she keep him on steroids so that he wouldn't get any more rashes. In the next few days, the rash cleared up on its own. Lamott says, "I didn't even know what anything was called," but she trusted in the doctor's advice and applied the cream whenever Sam needed it. "It seemed like a miracle," she writes, "and I have never doubted it since."
